Cumulonimbus Arcus Cloud

Posted by Koen (Antwerp, Belgium) on 2 July 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Dramatic clouds comming in from the south across Paris. The photo is a little grainy and odd because its shot through a car window with some reflection disturbing the picture.

The cloud you see is an Cumulonimbus arcus or roll cloud that develops on the leading edge of a thunderstorm. At this moment I was just passing under the arcus front, so you can't clearly see the front itself only the bottom of it. More info can be found on wikipedia:
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roll_cloud" . Some mammatus clouds were also present although not that obvious in this picture.
